Iredell County recycling coordinator Diane Lewis recently received the 2007-08 Ralph W. Ketner Employee Productivity Award from the N.C. Association of County Commissioners.

Lewis won for implementing a system to recycle rigid plastics and keep them from entering the county landfill.

The county has found that there is a market for the rigid plastics and is able to collect 10 cents per pound. Having processed 324,000 pounds at the time of application, the county has collected $32,400 in sales of the material.

The county estimates it has saved 311 cubic yards in its landfill, all while helping companies avoid $5,670 in tipping fees. The gain in revenue and landfill has been more than enough to offset any loss in tipping taxes.
