Bikers ride to help slain man's kids

Easy Eddie's Motorcycles, Service and Lounge, 12125 Statesville Road, will host the fifth annual Derek Ellis Memorial Ride on Saturday. Derek Ellis was stabbed to death on Dec. 17, 2003. Proceeds from the ride go to the Ellis children's trust fund.

Participants can begin lining up at 11 a.m. at Easy Eddie's. The police-escorted ride will begin at noon and finish at Easy Eddie's with prizes, food and live music by The Part Time Blues Band.

Latino Festival

Huntersville Elementary School will host the Fourth Annual Latino Festival 2-5 p.m. Sept. 28 to celebrate Latin music and culture. Latino foods will be available, along with games, food and music featuring the Trukoband and Los Caporales Mariachi Band.

Angels of '97

Angels of '97 and the McIntosh Law Firm will host the fifth annual Angels of '97 golf tournament on Friday. “Puttin' Fore a Purpose” registration begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Birkdale Golf Course. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 2 p.m., with an awards dinner to follow the tournament.

Angels of '97 was founded in 1997 to honor the lives of five students from the North Mecklenburg Class of '97 who lost their lives before graduating. The group gives scholarships to local high school students and helps families that have suffered the loss of a child or sibling.

This event is in honor of Laura Barnette, Travis Childers, Calvin Keziah, Mandi Meador and Kancham Potts. Team and individuals can register to participate. Details: www.angelsof97.com.
