About 6,000 area fourth- and fifth-graders traveled to Mars last week via the Open Dream Ensemble's live performance of “The Red Planet.”
The live radio broadcast-type play takes place in 2158. It combines dance, drama, music and science to tell the story of Earth's first community on Mars.
Teachers received study guides to help them incorporate the program into the curriculum.
The seven cast members of the ensemble are graduates of the N.C. School of the Arts.

They performed two shows each day Monday through Wednesday at the Kannapolis Performing Arts Center. Their appearance was part of the Cabarrus Arts Council's “Students Take pART in the ARTs” program.
This is the eighth consecutive year the Arts Council has partnered with the Cabarrus and Kannapolis public schools, and participating private schools, to bring professional performing artists to area students.
