Moses H. Cone Park Memorial Park and Flat Top Manor

The Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is located at milepost 294 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. www.blueridgeheritage.com.

Hours: March 15-Nov. 30. Seven days a week, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Activities: The Flat Top Manor is a 20-room, 13,000-square-foot mansion built in 1901. It is now home to the Parkway Craft Center that features handmade regional crafts such as quilting, embroidery, weaving, pottery, glass-blowing, and woodcarving. There are 25 miles of carriage trails on the 3,500 acre estate and trails are available for horse drawn carriages, horseback riding, and hiking. The estate is also home to the Cone family cemetery, and a carriage and apple barn.

Directions from uptown: From South Church Street, turn right onto I-277 S. Continue onto US-74 W. Turn left onto the Interstate 485 Inner N ramp. Take exit 10B to merge onto I-85 S toward Gastonia/Spartanburg. Take exit 17 for US-321 S/US-321 N toward Gastonia/Lincolnton. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for US-321 N. Turn left at US-321 N/N Chester Street, continue to follow US-321 N. Turn left at Main Street/US-321 Bus. Turn right at US-221 S/Yonahlossee Road. Turn right at Cone Road. Turn left at Shulls Mill Road. Take the second right onto Flannery Fork Road. Destination will be on the right.

Distance from Charlotte: About 2 hours.

Nearby: Drive into Blowing Rock for outlet shopping and dining, or venture to Boone to visit the home of the Mountaineers at Appalachian State University.
