Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools

Summer graduation: CMS will hold summer commencement ceremonies for Hopewell High and North Mecklenburg High graduates Aug. 3. The ceremonies will be at Bojangles' Coliseum, 2700 E. Independence Blvd. Hopewell's ceremony is 9 a.m. and North Mecklenburg is at 11:30 a.m. Commuters and guests should be aware that graduations will increase traffic during the morning drive.

For security reasons, guests will not be allowed to bring the following items into graduations: flowers, duffel bags, fanny packs, backpacks, gifts, balloons, air horns and noisemakers. Guests will also be checked with a metal detector prior to entering the venue. Parking is free, and doors open one hour before each graduation begins. There will be no reserved seating.

SouthLake Christian Academy

Scholarship winner: Catherine Wolter of Huntersville was among 10 high school seniors in the United States who received a $2,500 college scholarship from Huntersville-based American Tire Distributors Inc. She will attend Asbury University in Kentucky. Eligible for the scholarships are high-school seniors who are dependents of full-time American Tire employees, who are in need of tuition support and who have demonstrated high academic achievements, leadership skills and commitment to their schools and communities. The program was established in 1989 and has awarded more than $125,000 to graduates.

North Mecklenburg High

National Merit scholars: The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has named 18 CMS graduates as 2010 National Merit Scholars, including North Mecklenburg High student Christopher Bradfield.
