National Night Out provides community with food, fun

Neighbors in the Cornelius area will have the opportunity to meet their local police officers and participate in a night of food and fun.

National Night Out, sponsored by the Cornelius Police Department, will kick off the anti-crime observance 7-9 p.m. Aug. 3. The free event will be held at the Jetton Village gazebo near the Harris Teeter Shopping Center, 19908 North Cove Road, Cornelius.

America's night out against crime will feature live music, food, games and a special guest appearance by Buzz Lightyear and Woody from "Toy Story 3."

The evening is geared towards community and family safety and wellness, said Sgt. George W. Brinzey of the Cornelius Police Department.

Last year, National Night Out was hosted in the Smithfield community. The police department plans to rotate the venue of the event each year, said Brinzey.

"There's no real reason it's not going to be held in Smithfield, but we are certainly making every effort to allow everyone to attend," he said.

Shuttle buses from the Smithfield community center to National Night Out will be provided.

National Night Out allows neighbors to meet their local officers and develop a police and community partnership.

"We are there for them and we hope they are there for us," said Brinzey.

The event, held the first Tuesday in August, began in Northfield, N.J., in 1984 and has since spread across the country.

A few organizations participating in this year's Cornelius event include the U.S. Army Reserve, Presbyterian Hospital, Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity, Michael Waltrip Racing and more.
