UNC Chapel Hill

Inducted: Austin Felker, a 2009 graduate of Cannon School, was recently recognized as a member of the Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization at UNC Chapel Hill. The sophomore Austin will begin his sophomore year at UNC Chapel Hill in August. He is the son of Eric and Sandra Felker of Cornelius.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools

Scholarships for teachers: Five CMS music teachers earned $9,000 total in scholarships to attend the Teaching Guitar Workshop, held at Winthrop University July 26-30. Each teacher received three graduate credits, a guitar, guitar accessories and instructional materials. The teachers have or will be establishing guitar programs at their schools. The teachers include:

Ruth Petersen, band director at Bailey Middle.

Dr. Lynda Pickney, orchestra director at North Mecklenburg and Hopewell high schools

Sonja Smith, band director at Hopewell High.

Training programs: The Center for School Improvement and Parent University will offer training to provide an overview of the district's plan for continuous improvement, including the development, evaluation, and revision processes for the School Improvement Plan. The 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 session is for new school leadership team chairpersons and members; it will be at the Education Center fourth floor board room, 701 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Charlotte. 'Fat Boy Chronicles'

Davidson Day School:

P.E. Uniforms: Students in grades 4-8 are now required to wear uniforms in physical education classes. To purchase, go to www.dixiesport.com, click on My Team Shop and enter the team access code patrio7NQ.

School Uniforms: Used school uniforms will be available for purchase through the first week of school. Items are on the second floor landing. The suggested donation is $5 per item, which can be paid by cash or check at the front desk. Used uniforms in good condition for donation may be dropped off in the bin on the landing. New uniforms can still be bought through Lands End or our new local vendor, EmbroidMe Lake Norman.

Wheels and Meals: The lunch program begins serving students Aug. 23. Menus will be online Aug. 16 and orders for August and September must be submitted by noon Aug. 20.

Updated Family Handbook: This year's Family Handbook is available online. Families must confirm that they've read the updated version by signing the acknowledgement form available in the handbook.

Recreational Soccer Teams: The school and the Lake Norman Soccer Club will offer co-ed recreational soccer this fall to students with teams for ages 4-5 and 6-7. Practices are Monday and Wednesdays, at least one day a week at the school, with games on Saturdays. Registration closes Aug. 20 and space is limited.
