Christ The King Catholic High
Open enrollment: Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools plan to open the first Lake Norman area Catholic high school in August 2011. Enrollment is open for the ninth grade. The school will open August 2011 in a temporary location at 13728 Statesville Road, Huntersville. Enrollment is open until Oct. 15, accepting all faiths interested in a private Catholic school education. A minimum of 100 ninth-graders is required. The high school will continue to add a grade each year, with the first graduating class expected in 2014. National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists: Two Cannon School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program: Madeline Hurley of Huntersville and Eleanor Munger of Davidson. The students are among 16,000 seniors nationwide who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, to be awarded next spring.
J.V. Washam Elementary
Goodwill donation trailer: The school in Cornelius kicked off the Goodwill donation program with a school-wide drive on Oct. 4-5. Through donation drives, students learn how their donations of clothing, books, toys and household items positively impact the environment and the community. The donations will be sold in Goodwill's retail stores.
"We are proud to be a supportive part of the community and excited to team with Goodwill. The students and staff at J.V. Washam believe strongly in meaningful community service," said Principal Raymond Giovanelli. "This is a wonderful, real-life example we can share with our children to show the impact of caring and supporting those around us."

Volleyball fundraiser: Cushioned stadium seats will have the new logo and fold up for easy transport. The cost is $30. Contact the school for ordering details by Oct. 11.

100 percent: The school made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2009-2010 school year by meeting 13 out of 13 target goals.
