For the last four seasons, North Mecklenburg's Katie Kirk and East Lincoln's Mattie Tobey have developed into the two of the state's best golfers.
Last week, both seniors fell just short of capping off their careers at the top, as Kirk (4A) and Tobey (1A/2A/3A) finished second in the state at their respective meets. Both Kirk (East Carolina) and Tobey (Texas Tech) will continue their careers at the collegiate level.
Tobey led the Mustangs to a third straight Southern Piedmont title with Brittany Smith and Ashley Jennings contributing to a solid East Lincoln squad.
Meanwhile, North Mecklenburg came up just short of Lake Norman in the I-Meck tournament.

Lake Norman News Golfer of the Year: Katie Kirk, North Mecklenburg
Katie Kirk loves to play golf. In an average week, the North Meck senior plays more than 100 holes, while practicing, playing or working on her fitness at least five hours a day.
For the last four years, all of that work has helped Kirk establish herself not only as one of the top golfers in the state, but also as one of the best young golfers in the southeast.
Kirk is currently ranked No. 1 in the state (golfweek.com), No. 4 in the Carolinas (Carolina Golf Association) and No. 55 in the nation in her class.
Kirk finished her high school career in style, finishing second in the state meet and fifth at the 4A West Regionals.
Kirk was also named I-Meck Golfer of the Year, after leading the conference in scoring average at 37 (per nine holes).
Lake Norman News Coach of the Year: Barbara Haggart, East Lincoln
Barbara Haggart wanted to go out on top. This year, the East Lincoln golf coach did just that guiding the Mustangs to their third consecutive Southern Piedmont conference title in her final season at the helm of the team.
Haggart, who is retiring after this school year, led East Lincoln to another domination of the SPC, as the Mustangs won the conference title by 54 strokes over the course of the season. Haggart also earned SPC Coach of the Year honors this season for the third time.
