Smithville GED classes: Residents of the Smithville area of Cornelius have greater access to GED classes now through the Ausie Rivens Scholarship Foundation. The foundation has partnered with Central Piedmont Community College to offer GED classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays starting Jan. 10 at 20805 Catawba Ave. in Cornelius. Other residents of northern Mecklenburg are also eligible for the classes. The Ausie Rivens Scholarship Foundation Inc. was founded in 2003 in memory of Ausie Rivens, the first African-American barber in Cornelius. Details: 704-493-4955 or www.rivensscholarship.com.
