Close to 100 residents from Cowans Ford gathered on the west shores of Lake Norman under a blue sky May 21, to pay tribute to the nation's veterans on Armed Forces Day.
The annual observance is organized by the Cowans Ford Garden Club, in conjunction with the Cowans Ford Homeowners Association and the Diggers and Duffers Garden Club. In addition to the program, American flags are distributed each year to homeowners throughout the community for display during the week preceding the ceremony.
At this year's program, Boy Scout Troop 707 handled the posting of the colors, and the keynote address was delivered by retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom Waskow, who lives in Cowans Ford. In his remarks to the audience, Waskow urged the citizens not to forget the tremendous sacrifices made by veterans, and also to use them as a resource of intelligence and understanding. "I urge you to talk to our veterans. They are a tremendous part of our national history."
