More than 165 participants competed in the third annual FIRE 5K and barbecue benefit at the Ada Jenkins Center, helping raise more than $30,000 for the center. Eight teams participated in the annual barbecue competition April 30, which event-goers sampled throughout the day.
Judges for the barbecue cook-off included Davidson Mayor John Woods, Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte, Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain and Ada Jenkins board member Tom Grogan, as well as Adam Boatsman and Dale Gillmore of Boatsman and Gillmore, PLLC.
DDQ and Ten Ten Bar B Que tied for first place in the Hogmaster Division. Third place went to the Moonswine Racers. Mert's Heart and Soul won best set-up. Ten Ten Bar B Que also won the People's Choice Award. Patrons texted votes for their favorite barbecue at the event.
Overall winners for the following groups in the 5K are: Jean Hargett and Amanda Stanley, female overall; Justin Reitz and Tony Brown, male overall.
The money raised at the event will go toward the 21 programs and services offered at the Ada Jenkins Center.
