North Mecklenburg High

Debate team: Members of the North Meck Debate & Speech Team attended the NCFL Grand National Championship in Washington, D.C. More than 2,000 students competed in the event. Senior Cameron Langford and junior Conner Taylor reached the Octofinal round in Public Forum Debate, but lost on a 2-1 decision. Junior Catherine Bizub reached the semifinal round in Student Congress. Three members of the team will attend the NFL National Championships in Dallas, Texas June 13-18. Those students are senior Raul Gonzalez in Original Oratory and the team of junior Brooke Carter and sophomore James Williams in Duo Interpretation.

JV Washam Elementary

Food drive results: The JV Washam Leadership Club collected canned food for the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson. The school collected about 1400 cans or boxes of food for the Ada Jenkins food bank.


Touch a Truck Event: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. June 11 at the Mcguire Nuclear Station and EnergyExplorium. Vehicles of all shapes and sizes will be parked at McGuire Nuclear Station for Touch a Truck, a free event for the family. This events allows children to explore specialty vehicles and learn about safety around heavy machinery. Police cars, electric cars, fire trucks and a miniature airplane will be showcased as well as monster tractors. Police and fire departments will participate in the event.

Cannon School

National Merit Scholar: Huntersville senior Madeline Hurley received a National Merit Scholarship from UNC-Chapel Hill, which she will attend this fall. She was selected among finalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill. The scholarship is worth $1,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.
