Teacher of the Year: Donna Poynton was named Teacher of the Year.

Lakeshore Middle

Book donation: The Student Crew donated more than $350 worth of children's books to Statesville's Davis Memorial Hospital.

Lakeshore Elementary

Gardening: Lakeshore received third place in a national contest for a schoolwide garden. For the past two years, the third-grade classes have participated in a class garden by planting flowers and vegetables to learn about soil and nutrition. Their prize was Flip video cameras, Root 4 Kids merchandise and Annie's food products.

Troutman Elementary

Patriotism award: The school received the Joe Foss Institute Patriotism Award for its recognition of veterans this Memorial Day.

Iredell-Statesville Schools

Summer hours: For all schools and offices: 8a.m.-5p.m. Monday-Thursday June20-July29.

Catawba County Schools

Transfer applications: The district is accepting student transfer applications from parents who want to transfer a child into or within the district. Approval of a request must be obtained for a student to attend a school other than the one that serves the parent's home. Applications will be accepted in the Catawba County Schools Annex at 2285 N. Anderson Ave. in Newton until 5 p.m. Aug. 1 or until all transfer slots are filled. Transcripts, attendance records, discipline records and a notarized affidavit are required for all students except kindergartners. Forms are available through the district website or by calling Wendy Griffith at 828-464-8333, ext. 180328.
