Sewers: The Town Board awarded a $697,000 contract to West Consultants of Morganton for engineering services related to the installation of sewers in the Goodman Road area. The project includes 2,900 feet of sewer lines as well as a pump station and is being funded through a federal Community Block Grant.

Characters wanted

Carolina Renaissance Festival: The outdoor theater in Huntersville will hold open auditions for street characters, musicians, dancers and variety acts 9 a.m.- noon July 9 and 6:30- 9p.m. July 13 at Spirit Square Arts Center, 345N. College St., Charlotte. The festival is seeking male actors to fill the role of king, which has requirements that can be found at RenFestInfo.com. The festival is held weekends Oct. 8- Nov. 20.

News from the past week's Observer

Shelby Dean Martin, 73, of Mooresville pleaded guilty Thursday to 19 counts of securities fraud and was sentenced to at least nine years and eight months in prison. Authorities say Martin ran a Ponzi scheme that took in $18.5 million from at least 100 investors from 2004-2008.
