Park plans: The grand opening of the Mazeppa Road Park is scheduled for Sept. 3. The park includes a baseball complex, soccer complex and playground.


New appointees: The Town Board appointed Steve Cash to a three-year term as a member of the Planning and Zoning Board. The board also appointed Kenneth Reid to serve as an alternate member to the Technical Review Committee.

Police training: K-9 Officer Russell Jones received the Criminal Justice/Advanced Law Enforcement Award upon the completion of more than 1,100 hours in special training. The award is presented by the Office of State Attorney General Roy Cooper and the state Department of Justice.

Book sale: Friends of Catawba County Library is collecting books for the Aug. 4-6 book sale at the Main Library in Newton. Children's books are particularly needed. Donations can be dropped off at the Sherrills Ford branch.

Abuse prevention training: The Children's Advocacy Center of Catawba County "Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children" is training adults in how to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse. The center is asking organizations to sponsor a training session by providing a venue for the training. Facilitators lead the discussions. Details: 828-465-7665.
