Lake Norman & Mooresville

They called it puppy love

An unusual ceremony was held on the shores of Lake Norman.

The "bridegroom" flew in from the Seattle area on a flight that was diverted from Charlotte because of a ferocious summer rain storm.

Delayed in Newark, N.J., for six hours, the bridegroom, Riley Button Harmer, was shuttled through security four times so he could be walked.

Finally, after traveling 171/2 hours, Riley arrived in Charlotte, safe in his crate under the airplane seat of his master, Lynne Harmer, 36, of Issaguah, Wash.

Bridesmaid, Brooke Harmer, 11, and best man Canyon Harmer, 8, accompanied Riley, a 3-year-old Havanese, and their mom on the flight, too.

Waiting for Riley was CC Muffin, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu, owned by Harmer's sister, Christine Malick, 43, of Elysian Drive, Mooresville.

The sisters had joked about the dogs being married. This year they decided the time was right.

Christine's three children, Analise, 11; Isabella, 9; and Genevieve, 8, were also bridesmaids.

Upon Riley's arrival, the flurry of wedding planning ensued.

An Evite invitation read: Mr. and Mrs. Jay Michael Malick request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their puppy C.C. Muffin to Mr. Riley Button Harmer at half past two o'clock.

The family gathered lakeside for the ceremony. The program read: "A special bark goes out to all of our guests who made our wedding day as sweet as a doggy treat. Our puppy love will be felt throughout the entire canine community. Love and Licks, XOXO CC & Riley."
