Pawleys island hosts art, music

Activities: The two-week Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art begins Sept. 18 with a gallery crawl.

Festival highlights include:

Sept. 20: Free-to-see films - "Saving Sandy Island" (about the Gullah community) and "Uncommon Folk" (about six folk artists) - will be shown at the Tara Theatre, at Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Sept. 21, the venue will show a documentary about S.C. blues musician Mac Arnold and "They Came to Play" (about the International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs).

Sept. 23: Pawleys Island Wine Gala will be staged at The Reserve Golf Club.

Events at Brookgreen Garden include a Sept. 24 contemporary jazz concert by Spyro Gyra; a Sept. 25 bluegrass concert by Kickin Grass Band; a Sept. 29 show by harmony group Ball in the House; a Sept. 30 Broadway/standards concert by the David Osborne Trio, and a pop-music show Oct. 1 by the Hit Men.

Sept. 27: Charleston Chamber Opera will perform in Pawleys Island at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church.

Oct. 1: Chalk Walk brings pro and amateur sidewalk artists together at Brookgreen Gardens. Kids will be amazed at the artistry and have a closer-eye view of the creations than their parents.
