Teaching contest: RBC Bank recently kicked off its Tribute to Teachers awards program to recognize teachers dedicated to excellence in the classroom. Through Oct. 16, residents can nominate outstanding and deserving teachers in their communities.
RBC Bank will announce the 50 new Tribute to Teachers honorees this December. Winners will receive $500 to spend on classroom materials, and one grand-prize winner will receive a $2,000 grand prize shopping spree for his or her classroom.

Discount lawnmowers: Residents in the Charlotte area can buy discounted, battery-powered lawnmowers that pollutes less than gasoline-powered mowers.

Health community grant: The Centers for Disease Control recently awarded the town of Davidson a $35,000 grant to help fund healthy community initiatives in Davidson over the next three years.
Davidson was one of six recipients of the 2011 "Health Impact Assessment to Foster Community Design" grants.
Of the six award recipients, Davidson is the only municipality its size and the only municipality in the Southeast to receive a grant.
