Siren test: Sirens around McGuire Nuclear Station will be tested at 11:50 a.m. today. No public action is required during this three-minute test, which is held to ensure the sirens work properly.

Businesses wanted: Visit Lake Norman is encouraging businesses in the towns of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville to sign up as potential vendors for the Democratic National Convention, which is coming to Charlotte in September 2012. To participate, businesses should register at visitlakenorman.org/dnc.

Fitness challenge: Outdoor enthusiasts and runners can take part in Rural Hill's new Seven and Seven Challenge. The Oct. 15event features a 7-kilometer trail run as well as a 7-acre corn maze. The race starts 9:30 a.m. and finishes at Rural Hill's Amazing Maize Maze. For details and registration, visit www.ruralzhill.net.

Habitat event: Our Towns Habitat for Humanity's Biggest Cheese in Town 2011 competition will continue this week .

At 6 p.m. Oct. 14 Gerald Worrell of Northwestern Mutual Financial will host Antiques OFF THE Road Show at 19407 Meta Road in Cornelius. During the event, a professional appraiser will assess the value of items brought in.

The Biggest Cheese in Town is an annual event in which individuals pledge to raise at least $1,000 for Our Towns. The one who raises the most will be crowned "Biggest Cheese in Town" on Oct. 21 at the Cheese Ball.
