Hough High

Essay contest: The annual National High School Essay Contest, sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., is accepting manuscript submissions. Entries must be postmarked by midnight Nov. 1. Details on rules and rating criteria available in Student Services.

Shelter gifts: Avery Watkins, a Cannon School student who resides in Huntersville, recently donated all of her birthday gifts to the Cornelius Animal Shelter. Instead of asking for presents for herself, the third-grader received pet food, treats and essential items needed by the shelter to care for animals.

She was allowed to play with the shelter's animals for as long as she wanted.
