Chefs to compete at Saturday's market

Five area chefs will compete Saturday in the first Winter Market Chef Challenge at the Davidson Farmer's Market.

The competition will celebrate opening day of the market's Winter Market, which will be open 9 a.m. to noon on the first and third Saturdays in November and December. From January through March, the market will be open on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

The chefs in Saturday's competition will cook with four mystery market items that will be unveiled when they arrive.

Chefs will be allowed 10 minutes to shop for a bonus market item before they begin cooking. They will have 45 minutes to prepare their dishes and present them for judging.

The chefs are:

Vera Samuels, a Johnson & Wales graduate, personal chef and DFM demo chef.

Wes Choplin of Choplin's Restaurant in Cornelius and a DFM demo chef.

Joe Kindred of Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen in Charlotte and a DFM demo chef.

Andres Arboleda of FlatIron Kitchen + Taphouse in Davidson and a DFM demo chef.

Adam Spears of Chef Charles Catering. He is a Johnson & Wales graduate.

The winner will receive a Community Market basket and bragging rights, market manager Courtney Spear said.

"We want to keep the market fun and exciting as we head into the winter season," Spear said in announcing the chef challenge last week. "Eating in season is still delicious, and our Winter Market chefs are going to demonstrate that. These chefs are very talented, and we are thrilled they are committed and ready for the challenge."
