Ironkids national triathlon: Several Lake Norman area kids recently competed in the Ironkids National Triathlon in Iowa.

Those who attended the national event were: Brandon Ellington, Hannah Ellington, Riley Gallagher, Ryan Hughes, Taylor Hughes, Karly Owen, Antonio Parades-Brown, Caleb Parades-Brown, Sean Powers and Hannah Wilder.

Habitat contest: Our Towns Habitat for Humanity recently announced The Biggest Cheese in Town for 2011. Wylie Cossar, owner of Aaragon Investigation Agency in Mooresville, raised the most money, $8,400, during the annual contest. Runners-up were Bill Kinney of Kilwins, Huntersville, in first and Julia Austin of FiFi's Fine Resale, Cornelius, in second.

Poetry slam: Davidson College will host the inaugural Carolina Collegiate Slam with Duke University, UNC Charlotte, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, Johnson C. Smith University, and North Carolina A&T at 8 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Duke Family Performance Hall in the Alvarez Union on Davidson's campus. Admission for students is free with identification, and the cost for nonstudents is $3. The event will help support the local arts community.
