Literary magazine: Submissions accepted through Dec. 23 for the school's new literary magazine. Submissions can include short stories, poetry, book reviews, movie reviews, music reviews, opinion-based articles and artwork/photography (black-and-white). Print entries cannot be more than 650 words. Artwork/photography must be scanned and sent as JPEG files.

Advance tickets $15 per couple and $5 for each additional student; at the door, $20 per couple and $10 for each additional student. Advance payment forms must be turned in by Dec. 21.

Flat Classroom project: Teacher Julie Buda's third-graders are wrapping up their participation in the FCP's "A Week in the Life" project, which involves elementary school students from 19 U.S. schools and six countries. Buda's class got to know the other students involved in the project through Edmodo, a networking site for classrooms.

Teen Miss Dance N.C.: Eighth-grade student Rachel Harris was crowned Teen Miss Dance North Carolina after earning the highest scores in five different categories during the Nov. 12 competition in Greensboro. Harris qualified for the Dance Masters of America's annual scholarship competition in Anaheim, Calif., in July 2012.
