Results of art and writing contests: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has announced the winners of the district-wide 2011-2012 Martin Luther King Jr. Art and Writing Contests. The annual competition is open to elementary, middle and high school students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Each school chooses one winner from school-wide competitions in the "Visual Arts" and "Writing" categories to move on to the district contest. This year's theme was "Defending the Dream." An awards ceremony for the winners was held Jan. 12. Ceremony honors teachers: The Mallard Creek High hosted a ceremony on Jan. 19 to honor 121 Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System teachers who recently achieved the National Board Certified Teachers certification. Members of the board of education, Interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh and the Teacher Professional Development Department recognized the teachers for their accomplishment. To qualify for the voluntary certification, teachers participate in performance-based assessment and testing that takes one to three years to complete. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System employees 1,854 who have achieved this certification and is ranked fourth nationally for the most certified teachers.
