Brooks earns SoCon top player honor
Former Hopewell basketball star De'Mon Brooks, a Davidson sophomore, was named the Southern Conference men's basketball Player of the Year by the league's coaches last week.
Brooks averaged 15.8 points and 6.3 rebounds a game heading into the conference tournament to lead the Wildcats.
His coach, Bob McKillop, earned the conference's top coach honors. The honor was McKillop's seventh.

Teammate Jake Cohen, a junior who's averaging 13.9 points and six rebounds per game, was named SoCon player of the Year by members of the media.
Wrestlers place at state meet
Behind Lake Norman's Cody Karns, six area wrestlers placed at the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4A state meet last month.
Karns, a junior, was state runner-up in the 113-pound weight class. He finished 55-2 for the year.
Mooresville's Dontrez Patterson finished in third place in the 170-pound class, while Antonio Vanderburg was fifth among 195-pounders. Zack Brown was third in the 285-pound class for the Blue Devils.
Hough's Jordan Thompson was sixth at 145-pounds and Palmer Maples was fourth among 160-pounders.
