Mooresville Graded School District
Artist of the Month: At its October meeting, the board recognized Katherine Durgin, a Mooresville High School freshman, as the district’s Artist of the Month for October. Katherine sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for attendees at the meeting. She has been singing for seven years and is a member of the Mooresville High chorus and theater programs. Before attending Mooresville High, she performed in 14 musicals.
Above and Beyond the Call of Duty: At its October meeting, the Mooresville Graded School District presented the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award for October to Lori Smith, Before and After School Program and kindergarten group instructor at Park View Elementary School. Smith was nominated by Cindy Karriker, BASP director, and Missy Foley.
Lake Norman High
Graduation rate recognition: State Superintendent June Atkinson recognized Lake Norman High during a recent luncheon ceremony for achieving a graduation rate of 96.8 percent for the 2013-14 school year, the second highest graduation rate among the 400-499 student cohort. The school received a plaque in recognition of the honor. The graduate rate is determined by students in a four-year cohort established by the number of freshman entering the school for the fall of 2010. This was the fifth year in a row for Lake Norman High to receive the honor.
PTSA meeting change: The November PTSA meeting has been cancelled because there is no school on Nov.4. The next meeting will be held 1-2 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Media Center.
Pet-food drive: The Lake Norman High School PAWS Club is sponsoring a pet-food drive through Dec. 5 to benefit the Humane Society of Iredell County. Donations can be dropped off in room 508.
South Iredell High
Driver education: Registration is being accepted through noon on Nov. 10 in the main office for the next driver education class. The class will be held 3:15-6 p.m. Nov. 10-24 in the auditorium. There will be no class on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Students enrolling must have been born by May 14, 2000. Enrollees are required to attend all sessions. Winter Soccer Clinic Series: Cannon School’s Director of Soccer Matt Barlow will offer his third annual Winter Soccer Clinic Series for players ages 7-12 of all skill levels. Clinics will be held noon-1:30 p.m. on five Saturdays Dec. 20-Jan. 31 on the Cannon School’s back field. Barlow has more than 20 years of coaching experience and holds the NSCAA Premier and National Youth Diplomas as well as licenses in Brazil, Holland and England. SAT Prep Course: Cannon School will offer the Princeton Review SAT Prep Course on on select Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings Jan. 31-March 7, 2015. Both courses are open to private, public and homeschooled students and are recommended for juniors. The course focuses on the essential test elements and includes 18 hours of live instruction. The registration fee of $450 covers course materials and pre- and post-tests scored by the Princeton Review. Registration is required, and class size is limited.
