Area Habitats consolidate

In a move to reduce expenses while expanding outreach, the boards of the Lake Norman and Iredell County Habitats for Humanity have agreed to consolidate operations.

The newly combined organization will be located in Cornelius. Jeff Porter, who previously served with the Iredell Habitat for Humanity will be the executive director of the new Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.

“Our new organization will allow us to focus less on operations and more on our mission, which is seeking to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope,” Porter said. The 50-year-old Georgia native has worked with Iredell Habitat for a year. Prior to that, he was senior minister at First Baptist Church in Statesville. He has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Emory University in Atlanta

According to Porter, a major goal of the consolidation is to extend the communities that are currently served by Habitat. Those include Mooresville, Davidson, Huntersville and Cornelius.

The consolidation was achieved financially through an acquisition of the two Habitats by the Lake Norman facility. The boards of the two organizations have joined and will operate as one board to oversee the organization’s operations. The newly combined Habitat will also acquire the operation of the ReStore Habitat retail store in Statesville and ultimately operate a total of three Habitat stores: Cornelius, Mooresville and Statesville.

“Our intention is to leverage the resources of both affiliates to build an even stronger presence across Iredell and Northern Mecklenburg counties,” said Bob Dunlap, board president of Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, 501-C3 ecumenical organization that offers homes to people who live in substandard housing, Habitat builds or renovates homes, then sells them through zero interest, no-profit mortgages. The qualifications to receive a Habitat home are a need for decent affordable housing, ability to pay for the home and a willingness to partner with Habitat.

Besides the housing component, Habitat operates three nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances to the public at a fraction of their retail price. Proceeds from the stores are used to build and renovate homes for those in need of housing.
