The Burke County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a human skull and several bones were found near a lake in the county on Monday. Officials confirmed the investigation Tuesday morning.
Officials say hunters and their dogs discovered the skull near Lake James, on property belonging to Duke Energy.
Crews spent much of the day searching for more possible remains near the lake. They say the skull was found about 100 yards from the lake's spillway.
Crews also said they found eight other bones believed to be human near the same area. They are being sent to a medical examiner to determine whether they are human.
Officials say that if the bones are human and all from the same person, it is likely that animals scattered the remains.
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the case and officials are working to determine the gender and age of the person the skull belonged to.
The sheriff says there is no indication of foul play, at this time, but they are not ruling anything out. Officials say the public has no reason to be in fear.
According to officials, homeless people have been known to be in the area and evidence of an encampment was found a few months ago. No one was found in the area or reported missing from there.
