Two people are dead after fleeing from police Sunday morning, according to Cornelius police.

Around 1:27 a.m. Cornelius police officers say they saw a car speeding in the 19000 block of West Catawba Avenue. When officers tried to pull over the vehicle at the intersection of Bethel Church Road and Jetton Road, the vehicle drove away.

According to police, the driver almost hit a second Cornelius police car near the intersection of Jetton Road and West Catawba Avenue. Officers followed the car west on Jetton Road before deciding to cancel the pursuit.

Officers reportedly lost sight of the vehicle, then found it crashed into a tree on Jetton Road near Meta Road. Officers say the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

Cornelius Fire Department responded to put out the flames and two people were found dead in the vehicle.

The crash was under investigation and say they will release the names of the victims once they are positively identified and family has been notified.
