A child died after being struck by a vehicle outside an elementary school in Pageland, S.C., Tuesday morning, according to Pageland police.
The accident happened just after 9:30 a.m. outside Pageland Elementary School on W McGregor Street. The family of the child said they were enrolling their children at the school when they sent a child to the car to grab additional documents.
When the child attempted to cross the street, the child was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Union and pronounced dead less than an hour after being hit, around 10:21 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital; that person’s condition has not been released.
No names or possible charges have been released. The school district says it will have counselors available for students and staff as needed.
The crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
