A man is facing charges in the killings of two women in Mitchell County.

Officials believe Cecil Scott Byrd killed Sarah Denise Riddle, 45, of Marion, and Lisa Ann Robbins, 49, of Deep Gap and burned their bodies. They believe he dumped Robbins' remains along the road and put Riddle's in a dumpster.

A search started Tuesday morning at a landfill in Caldwell County, where trash from Mitchell County is dumped, but was called off just after noon. Officials believe Riddle’s body was burned to the point of being nearly nothing, leaving too wide of a search area.

Officials believe burned remains found along the road belong to Robbins.

Mitchell County investigators and the State Bureau of Investigation were on the scene Tuesday.

According to sources, Byrd made statements to indicate that he killed the women. But no motive has been released.
