A man is charged with murder in connection to a deadly shooting in Cleveland County early Friday morning, deputies say.
Jonathan Terrell Wray, 24 of Lawndale, was charged in the shooting death of Christopher Oneal Odoms.
Around 1:40 a.m. Friday, officials responded to Holmes Street where they say a man, later identified as Odoms, had been shot at a party.
Officials arrived to find Odoms on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest area. Odoms was taken to Carolinas Health Care in Shelby where he was pronounced dead, officials say.
Following witness interviews, a murder warrant was issued for Wray, also known as “Jon Jon.” Wray was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He is being held at the Cleveland County Detention Center under no bond.
Police released no information about a possible motive for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, officials say.
Chris Key, a Cleveland County resident who lives across the street from the property where the party was taking place, said he saw the victim after he had been shot.
“He’s a good man,” Key said. “He didn’t deserve to die so young.”
Key said he didn't know why the shooting took place, and didn't understand why it had to happen at a holiday party.
Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman told reporters the investigation would still take time, despite a quick arrest.
“Even though there has been an arrest made, there's still a lot of legwork that has to be done,” Norman stated.
He said that investigators have yet to determine whether alcohol had been illegally sold at the party. He said a large building on the property had been rented out for the event.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office at 704-484-4822 or Crime Stoppers at 704-481-TIPS.
