A student was seriously injured Wednesday when he was hit in the face with a baseball at Indian Land High School.

The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on the baseball field. Officials said a 14-year-old boy was hit during fall baseball practice.

A safety director says the student was wearing a helmet with a face guard and running bases when another player threw a ball that hit him.

The ball managed to go through the face guard and hit the teen in the eye area. The player lost consciousness.

The student was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment. His name and condition were not immediately available.
