Remains of missing boater recovered from Lake Wylie

A missing boater found in Lake Wylie has been identified.

According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, sonar was used to find the man, later identified as Tony Hinson Jr., just after 1 p.m. Saturday. Divers then recovered his body between Beaver Creek and Crowder's Creek.

Officials say Hinson, 44, of York, was the owner of the boat and was driving when it overturned.

Earlier in the day, dense fog caused the search to be suspended for a few hours.

Rescue teams combed over the South Carolina side of Lake Wylie where the boat flipped between the towns of York and Clover Saturday morning.

SCDNR says Hinson and another man were leaving T-Bone's On the Lake restaurant around 2 a.m. when the 2002 ski boat took a sharp turn, causing it to overturn.

One man was able to make his way out of the water, but told police it felt like it took him an hour to swim to shore.

“Its just a shame that we have a tragedy here like this right at Christmas," said Lake Wylie resident David Roberts. "You know you got families ready for the holidays and whoever was out here was probably out here to have a good time and things went horribly wrong for them.”
