A 16-year-old girl from Shelby was hit by a car and killed Saturday morning, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers say two vehicles hit Nycia Copes at the intersection of Borders Road and Oak Grove Road at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday.
According to reports, Copes and a male passenger were standing in the intersection. Troopers do not know why the two were not in their vehicle.
One car reportedly drove up and hit both of them, then a second vehicle hit Copes. Troopers say she was killed on impact.

The male passenger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center. He is expected to be OK.
Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors at this time.
