Two people were killed in a traffic collision involving multiple tractor trailers and other vehicles on Interstate 77 in Chester County Thursday, according to the Chester County coroner.

The crash happened around 3:13 p.m. on northbound I-77 near mile marker 68, which is just north of exit 65, the Lancaster Highway exit. The interstate was shut down in both directions.

The coroner said that two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.

Officials have not released many details, but from WBTV’s Sky3 helicopter, it appeared at least two tractor trailers and at least three other vehicles were very heavily damaged.

At least one of the tractor trailers was severely burned, along with a very large area on both sides of the interstate. Two medical helicopters were also on the scene.

It is not clear what caused the crash or how many injuries were reported.

Drivers should avoid the area if at all possible.
