Family Circle Magazine recently named the town of Matthews one of the “10 Best Towns for Families” for 2015.

Matthews town leaders are thrilled.

“We’re ecstatic,” said Matthews Communications Director Jen Thompson. “This has generated quite a bit of excitement and enthusiasm in the town, and everyone is sharing the news with their family and friends that Matthews is on the map.”

To compile the list, editors worked with Onboard Informatics, a New York City research firm, to select 4,500 cities and towns with populations from 10,000 to 100,000.

A second pass narrowed the list to 1,400 localities having a high concentration of households with median incomes between $60,000 and $110,000.

Family Circle editors then looked at the places that best met family friendly criteria including affordable houses, quality schools, access to health care, low crime rates and financial stability.

Thompson said magazine staff contacted the town several times for information and clarification earlier in the year, but Matthews residents did not find out their town made the top 10 until the August edition of the magazine came out a few weeks ago.

Matthews is the only municipality in the Southeastern United States to receive the designation.
