The Humane Society of Charlotte has 154 new monthly donors, exceeding the goal set by the Paw-tomatic $10,000 Challenge.
The challenge served as a way to increase financial support for the Humane Society. If at least 100 people pledged to donate at least $5 per month by July 1, donor Russ Morrison, who lives in South Park, said he would give $10,000.
The Humane Society relies almost entirely on donations. The nonprofit has an annual operating budget of almost $4 million, and almost $3 million of that comes from donations.
The 154 new donors’ contributions add up to an additional $1,947 per month, said Donna Stucker, vice president of development at the Humane Society of Charlotte.
New revenue for 2016 would increase by $11,682.84 — the equivalent of 46 heartworm treatments for dogs infected by the parasites, Stucker said.
When Morrison’s $10,000 gift is factored in, new revenue will increase by $21,682.84 because of the challenge.
“I'm very excited about the success of the challenge,” said Morrison, 51, who works for Babson Capital Management.
Though Morrison has donated to the Humane Society before, this was the first time he has participated in a challenge.
