The new Women’s Center at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center is scheduled to open Aug. 8 – and not a minute too soon, according to hospital leaders.
“We’ve almost doubled deliveries in the past few years and we needed to add the space. This also brings all women’s services under one roof,” said Matthews Medical Center President Roland Bibeau.
Three years ago, 1,200 babies were born at the Matthews hospital. In 2015, that number climbed to over 2,000. The new addition gives the facility the ability to accommodate up to 4,000 deliveries per year, a number that may not be too far in the future as the area continues to grow and more doctors locate in or near the hospital.
Many amenities have been incorporated into the new space.
Bibeau said one of the most convenient features of the new building is a separate, covered entrance that will allow women in labor to check in directly at the Women’s Center, without having to go through the emergency room.
The first floor of the 26,000-square-foot building features a waiting area with an attached children’s play area, two conference rooms equipped with the latest technology, a lactation consulting area and a gift shop.
Pat Campbell, vice president for Women’s Services, said the conference room will be used for classes and other community events.
“With the new technology, we will be able to offer classes both in person and online. We will hold childbirth classes, breastfeeding classes, grandparent classes, sibling tours, hysterectomy and menopause classes and much more,” Campbell said.
The second floor of the new building links directly to the second floor of the main building. Over the past year, the 23 existing labor and delivery rooms have been renovated to match the ones in the new addition so the transition to the new building will be seamless.
In addition to the 10 new labor and delivery rooms, the second floor will be home to the Neonatal ICU with private and shared rooms for up to eight newborns who need extra care. The floor also holds two rooms for soon-to-be moms who need hospitalization in the days or weeks leading up to delivery. Three triage rooms provide examination space to determine if a woman is in labor and needs to be admitted.
Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor said the hospital is an integral part of the community and he’s pleased to see it expanding.
“The hospital is a tremendous partner and asset to our community. The new Women’s Center will provide much needed additional capacity as we have a lot of children being born in this part of Mecklenburg County,” Taylor said.
“I’m extremely proud and happy that the hospital continues to expand in our community. It has been an anchor here, and all the ancillary medical practices that have surrounded the campus have been a benefit to the health of our citizens and from an economic standpoint as well.”
