Terry Roueche and Zan Maddox each received $1,000 grants for the third quarter of the year from the Arts Council of York County.

Roueche will use the grant to enhance a performance space by buying chairs, a dimmer board and theatrical lighting units.

Maddox will use his grant to create promotional materials for galleries and frame shops.

The arts council allocates $18,000 annually to small grant awards. Organizations and individual artists may request up to $1,000 per grant and may receive up to two grants in a calendar year.

The grants are available to individual artists, nonprofits, teachers and schools throughout York County to support specific arts activities that promote an individual artist's professional development or career advancement.

Applications for the October-December 2008 grant period are required by Sept. 1. Details:

The United Way of York County is accepting nominations for its second annual United Men of York County calendar.

There are 12 categories ranging from education and business to fitness and law enforcement. The cost is $20 for a single nomination. The 5-karat plan for $100 gives the donor five nominations and two tickets to the agency's showcase event Sept. 25. Nominations must be received by Aug. 28. Details: www.united or call 803-324-2735.
