Bon appetit: All the food news you can use

Hi, I'm Dan Huntley and I'll be compiling restaurant news from Southern Mecklenburg, Union, York and Lancaster counties.

I live in York County but grew up off Charlotte's Providence Road. I'm a certified Foodie – cookbook author, weekend caterer and Kansas City BBQ Society judge. I even bottle my own barbecue sauce. This week I'm going to Oxford, Miss., to the annual meeting of the Southern Foodways Alliance, where I'm introducing keynote speaker Junior Johnson and we're discussing a food and drink produced here in the Carolinas – cured country hams and moonshine. On Nov. 6, I'm cooking an iron wash pot seafood gumbo and talking about African influences on Southern cooking at the Levine Museum of the New South.

In addition to restaurant news, I want to hear about farmers markets, cooking classes and cooking contests. And I want to hear food news from Union, York and Lancaster counties, as well as southern Mecklenburg. Bon appetit, y'all.


Gallery Restaurant introduces its fall menu featuring seasonal starters such as endive salad and white bean soup, and hearty entrees like roasted Muscovy duck breast and Atlantic salmon.

The fall menu also features butter-poached Maine lobster and sauteed sea scallops served with black “forbidden” rice. Earth Fare offers gluten-free treats for fall. Barbara D'Ambrosio of the Thoughtful Baker will demonstrate how to prepare a ragout of succulent, roasted fall vegetables scented with sage and rosemary and served over moist jalapeno cornbread.
