$10K for middle school sports: The Big South Conference raised $10,000 for middle school athletic programs in Mecklenburg and Union counties at its Big South 5K Road Race Oct. 23 at Blakeney Shopping Center. Forty-six middle schools were designated by participants as beneficiaries for a percentage of the registration fees. Additional proceeds will benefit all middle school athletic budgets in the two counties.

Gingerbread house contest: The gingerbread house contest has three categories: children, adults and groups. Dwellings must be made with edible materials. Entries due Dec. 1. Drop off children and adult entries at the Matthews Branch Library, and group entries at the Matthews Chamber of Commerce. Houses will be judged at both locations Dec. 4, before the Hometown Holiday festivities at 3 p.m. $75 for first place, $50 for second, $25 for third. Rea Road

Book drive: Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is looking for new and gently-used children's books for its Community Bookshelves program, which distributes books to agencies that serve families with few books in their homes. Take donations to the Main Library Branch at 310 N. Tryon St. or your closest branch. Bring them in a box or bag labeled "Amy Kukla, Main Library."
