Myers Park and Catholic lead south Charlotte soccer

The South Charlotte News area has long been one of the top regions for soccer in the state.

Four teams finished in the top four in the state, led by 4A state runner-up Myers Park. Charlotte Catholic and Charlotte Latin made it to the state semifinals in their respective classes and South Mecklenburg was No. 4 in the final state coaches poll.

Ardrey Kell, Providence and Providence Day also spent a good portion of the season the coaches' top 15 in the state.

So with all of these top-notch teams, who is the best of the best?

Coach of the Year: Oscar Del Pino, Charlotte Catholic - The third-year head coach has gone impressive 68-4-5 in his reign, including winning the 2008 3A state title. This year, the Cougars were one win away from getting another opportunity at a state championship, but they lost to 2-1 to Hickory in the state semifinals, their only loss of the season. Del Pino and his Cougars were dominant most of the way, outscoring their opponents 90 to six on the season.

Player of the Year: Erick Suarez, Myers Park - When Erick Suarez gets the ball, good things usually happen for Myers Park. This season, Suarez, a junior, proved to be one of the state's best goal scorers and playmakers, scoring 34 goals and dishing out 15 assists to lead the Mustangs to a 25-2 record.

Suarez led Myers Park to their third consecutive SW4A title and all the way to the state championship, before losing to Durham Jordan in the finals.
