Restaurant news: Experience a taste of the season

The Ballantyne Hotel and Lodge

The Ballantyne Hotel and Lodge is hosting a Gingerbread Village Professional and Amateur Competition. The competition includes two categories, with the winner of each earning a night's stay in the presidential suite at the Ballantyne Hotel, breakfast in bed and dinner for two at the Gallery Restaurant.

The Gingerbread Village will be on display through Dec. 26. Attendees who visit may vote on their favorite gingerbread house with a $1 minimum donation per vote. All proceeds will benefit Levine Children's Hospital.

Enjoy brunch with Santa Claus on Dec. 12. The buffet runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and includes breakfast items, a carving station and desserts. The cost is $39.95 for adults and $19.95 for children ages 5-12. Children younger than 4 are free. Reservations are required; 704-248-4100 or

Showcase your favorite holiday cookie or cupcake recipe at the Ultimate Cupcake and Cookie Challenge 2-4 p.m. Dec. 19. The $10 entry fee will benefit Levine Children's Hospital. The hotel's culinary team will select three winners in each category based on taste and presentation.

Breakfast with Santa is being served at Maggiano's beginning at 8 a.m. Dec. 18. The complete holiday buffet includes cinnamon French toast, Italian sausage and bacon frittata, homemade muffins, hot cocoa and more. Cost of the event is $15 for adults and $8 for kids 12 and younger; $1 of each meal goes to the Make a Wish Foundation. Reservations are required; call the restaurant for details.
