Pints for Pounds: For each blood donation in January and February, the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will donate six pounds of food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Shalom Park

College prep: College-admissions professionals will give a series of seminars on "Demystifying the College Application Process" 2-5 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Levine Jewish Community Center, 5007 Providence Road. Topics include: admissions essays, avoiding common mistakes, SAT strategies, financial aid and scholarships, getting the most from your guidance counselor and more. $140 per family. Country Day School

Service days: On Dec. 8-9, students at Country Day School in junior kindergarten through fourth grade donated items to Goodwill's Holiday Donation Drive. The students donated 764 items, including clothing, books and toys. The donations amounted to $21,000. On Dec. 20, students in ninth through 12th grade hosted a luncheon for 160 homeless guests from the Men's Shelter of Charlotte, the Salvation Army's Center of Hope and the Harvest Center. Students brought baked goods, served lunch and entertained children while their parents ate and cleaned up.
