"Pennies for Peace": East Mecklenburg High is raising money for "Pennies for Peace," a charity that builds schools in Central Asia to promote peace through education. A penny buys a pencil in Pakistan, and in a region where terrorist organizations recruit the uneducated, pencils can help the young start a new life. Students are encouraged to bring pocket change and bills to homeroom each Wednesday. The homeroom at each grade level that raises the most money will get breakfast in January.
