Governor's School picks: Two 11th-grade students - Rebecca Brenner, natural science, and Kerchaun Soong, art - have been selected to attend the Governor's School of North Carolina in Raleigh from June 12 to July 24. The school is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation.
Teacher picked for poster campaign: Upper school drama, film and broadcasting teacher Chad Fair recently was chosen by the NBA's Stephen Curry to participate in the "Behind Every Famous Person is a Fabulous Teacher" campaign, a national program of TeachersCount. A 2006 graduate of Charlotte Christian School, Curry went on to play basketball at Davidson College and in 2009 joined the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Fair was invited in early February by Curry and the NBA to the San Francisco Bay area to shoot the photo for the posters, which will be released this spring. Forum on play: Guest speaker Cheryl Wolfe of the Gesell Institute of Human Development will feature at a free forum titled "Is Play a Four Letter Word?" The event will be April 12 from 9:30-11 a.m. and is designed to help parents and early childhood educators learn more about how play enhances brain development for young children ages birth to 8. The event will be held in the Early Education Building on the campus of Charlotte Christian School and is open to the public. A question-and-answer session will follow. Wellness fair: The school health team is proud to announce the inaugural Southern Community Wellness Fair from 5-8 p.m. April 11 in the Mall Area at Ardrey Kell High School. All are welcome; bring your family, friends, neighbors, etc. Local business and organizations will have booths on site.
Student tapped for Merchant Marine Academy: Senior Hunter Rowan has been accepted to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for fall 2011. He will be swimming for the Academy's swim team as well.
French teacher now officer: Linda Harling, who has taught French at Covenant Day for 15 years, has been confirmed as vice president for the N.C. Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French. Following the two-year term as vice president, she will become president for a two-year term.
Grandfriends Day: Elementary students will host grandparents and special friends for their Grandfriends Day celebration April 8. Following a brunch, the children will perform for the guests and then welcome them into the classrooms to see the students' work.
Parent University: On April 9, the Arts and Science Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' Parent University will hold a day of fun and information for the whole family. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., families can enjoy access to museums, arts and cultural venues along uptown's "Cultural Mile" (from the Harvey B. Gantt Center to the McColl Center for Visual Art). Families are invited to become educated consumers of Charlotte's thriving arts and cultural community. During the day, participants will enjoy: mini-workshops for parents and students; student performances; hands-on arts and cultural experiences; access to museums, arts, and cultural venues (free or discounted entrance); and information for parents on strategies for using arts and cultural resources as extended learning tools. "Once Upon A Mattress": The Fine Arts department will perform the musical "Once Upon A Mattress" 7 p.m. April 7-9 and 3 p.m. April 10.
