Zoe Bell named coach of the year

Ardrey Kell volleyball coach Zoe Bell is one of two recipients of the sixth annual Toby Webb Coach of the Year Awards given by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

Bell, along with Ray Horton of Pender High in Burgaw, will be recognized at the NCHSAA's Annual Meeting on May 5 at UNC Chapel Hill.

The Webb Award annually recognizes an outstanding male and female coach.

Bell has been at Ardrey Kell for three years and spent 19 years as the coach at Providence High. She won four state titles at Providence and made the state finals in 2009 at Ardrey Kell. Her career record is 488-111.

Bell has also given back to the community, including raising money for breast cancer research in the Serve For the Cure Tournament the last seven years.

"Public art" by Charlotte painter Sharon Dowell is now on display at Gallery@LOOM located downtown at 120 Academy Street. LOOM will hold an art reception for Dowell’s exhibit 7 - 9 p.m. on August 11. Dowell will be there to discuss her work. Children’s art activities will take place next door.
