N.C. Outward Bound

Racing: The N.C. Outward Bound school is holding a series of races at the U.S. National White Water Center to raise scholarship money for Charlotte Mecklenburg students and educators. The scholarship will allow them to participate in Outward Bound adventures that "inspire people to discover and develop their potential to care for themselves, others and the world around them."

The last three race days are May 21, July 1 and Sept. 24. There are two races per day, one 5K and one longer race. For full details and to register, visit www.riverboundrace.com.

StayLocal

Win prizes: The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) has kicked off its second annual 'StayLocal' promotion. During May and June, every CBCC blood and platelet donor will be entered into a raffle to win local "staycation" packages and excursions.

Fighting cancer

Ride for Ava: The second annual "Ride for Ava and Kids Fighting Cancer" fundraiser will be 11 a.m.-4 p.m. May 15 at Rosehill Inn and Stables, 6623 Prospect Road, Monroe.

The event is sponsored by "Ava's Gift to June Inc.", a nonprofit that helps families who have children battling cancer as well as Retinoblastoma, a cancer of the eye. Children can ride horses, play games, win prizes and make arts and crafts. Entrance and parking are free. Activities and foods are $1 to $2 each with all proceeds benefiting qualified families in the area. There will also be a silent auction. For details, visit www.caringbridge.org/visit/avashiftlett.

Crohn's disease

Money for research: There will be a walk 4 p.m. May 15 at Freedom Park, 1900 E. Blvd., to raise money for research and awareness of children and adults suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

The three-mile walk will include music, a kid's zone and refreshments. Leashed pets and strollers are welcome. Donations are appreciated. Registration beings at 4 p.m. with the walk starting at 5 p.m. For details call 704-332-1611.

Give Kids The World

Barbecue: Give Kids The World barbecue will be 12-1:30 p.m. May 19 at The Staybridge Suites at Ballantyne, 15735 John J. Delaney Drive.

Give Kids the World is a nonprofit that exists to fulfill the wishes of all children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. They are given a cost-free visit to the Central Florida attractions and able to visit the Give Kids the World Village for as long as there is need. Lupus

Pledges sought: Walk for Lupus Now Charlotte will be held 3:30-5 p.m. May 21 at Symphony Park, 4400 Sharon Road. There is no fee to walk, but pledges are appreciated. Proceeds will support the Lupus Foundation of America. 877-849-8271.
